This article investigated the initial formation of Labor Law in Brazil. For this, a technique linked to indirect documentation was used. In the first topic, historical and economic information about the use of slave labor was raised, as well as how this process permeated the formation of Brazilian society. Then, the replacement of slave labor by that of European immigrants was presented and how the slavery inheritance was also perpetuated on these workers. From there, the poor living conditions of workers during the industrial expansion and the workers' movements that claimed changes were discussed. Finally, the first labor laws were highlighted. This process made it possible to draw two conclusions: the repercussion of slavery on the formation of labor relations in Brazil and the demystification of the concept that national labor legislation was not the result of struggles of the working class.
